Diagnostic Vascular Laboratory

Cerebral vascular tests:
Carotid artery duplex (includes follow-up for surgery and stents) – noninvasive ultrasound test of the carotid arteries to identify plaque and significant blockages that increase risk of stroke. We also check vertebral and subclavian arteries for significant blockage that may lead to other neurological problems.
No Prep
.

Transcranial artery duplex:
Noninvasive ultrasound test of the major arterial pathways within the brain for significant blockages. We use this test to obtain additional information in combination with carotid duplex. No Prep.

Venous duplex tests:
Upper and Lower extremity venous duplex – noninvasive ultrasound evaluation of the venous system of the arms and legs to look for blood clots. Venous clots could cause extremity swelling and pain, or can break off and migrate to the lungs. We also evaluate the lower extremity venous system prior to varicose vein therapy. No Prep.

Visceral vascular tests:
Renal artery duplex – noninvasive ultrasound evaluation of the kidney arteries to identify significant blockages that may contribute to hypertension or renal failure. Duplex is also used to follow up stent procedures of the kidney arteries. Prep – Fasting for 6 hours prior to examination.
Mesenteric artery duplex – noninvasive ultrasound evaluation of the intestinal arteries for significant blockage that may cause abdominal pain after eating. Prep – Fasting for 12 hours prior to examination.

Peripheral arterial tests:
Aortic aneurysm – noninvasive ultrasound evaluation of the abdominal aorta to identify, evaluate and follow aortic aneurysm. Prep – Fasting 6 hours prior to examination.
Lower extremity arterial duplex – noninvasive ultrasound test of the leg arteries to identify significant blockage that causes leg or hip pain with walking or exercise. Test may include resting ankle pressures and an exercise treadmill test. Duplex is also used to follow lower extremity artery stents and bypass grafts. Prep – may require fasting 6 hours prior to examination.

Screening tests – brief evaluation of common arterial disease sites in asymptomatic patients at reduced fees. If significant disease is identified, a full ultrasound examination will be needed to completely assess disease.
