Provider Profile J. Walter Smith, M.D. Dr. Walter Smith attended Wellington University NZ, where he majored in biochemistry. He completed his masters degree in biochemistry then received a scholarship to study at the University of Hawaii. While there, his interests turned to medicine and he transferred to the University of Chicago to complete his medical degree. His internal medicine residency was in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital, and he completed his hematology/oncology fellowship training at the University of Washington / Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He joined Overlake Internal Medicine in 1981. Dr. Smith served as Chief of Staff at Overlake Hospital Medical Center from 2004 - 2006. In his free time, he is an avid sailor.
