Comprehensive Annual Exam

The annual physical is encouraged for all of our patients. This provides an opportunity for the patient and the physician to review the patients general health. The doctor may advise the patient of recommended health care interventions needed to maintain good health.

Preoperative Physical Exam

Prior to surgery the surgeon may request that the patient's primary care doctor provide an exam and associated testing. This ensures the patient has no medical problems that need to be addressed prior to the surgery or to alert the surgeon of any conditions requiring attention before, during, and after the operation. This is usually a less comprehensive exam than an annual physical.

EKG/ECG

An EKG/ECG (electro-cardiogram) is a non-invasive test where sensors are placed on the chest to record the electrical activity of the heart. Doctors frequently order this as a baseline test of the heart for comparison to future tests. It is also frequently required as a pre-operative test for a surgical procedure. Lab personnel perform this test on site in the Primary Care clinic.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure is typically checked each time that you're in for a visit. Under certain circumstances it is desirable to know how the pressure varies throughout the entire day. In these cases, the doctor may order a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor. A cuff is applied to the arm that is attached to a small recorder. The results extracted from the recorder are translated into a report that graphs the blood pressure. The doctor uses this to determine if you have hypertension or whether the patient with high blood pressure is controlling it wiht medication.

The test involves breathing into a tube connected to a machine that muasures the amount of air moving in and out of the lungs. This test takes about 15 minutes.

Bone Density/DEXA SCAN

Overlake Internal Medicine has a state-of-the art bone density scanner. It is used to measure the bone density of the two most important parts of the skeleton (the spine and the hip) which are at risk for " weakening" of the bone structure, known as osteoporosis. The test uses a minute amount of X-ray exposure and takes about 15 minutes. A report is provided that compares the patient's density to a standard (or control) value. The test is used to detect osteoporosis as well as to monitor response to therapy for this condition.

Heel Ultrasound Screening (Screening for Osteoporis)

Whereas the Dexascan, above, is the "gold standard" for measuring bone density, the heel test is used as a screening test to assess if the patient is at risk for osteoporosis. It does not involve x-rays and is a simple test where the heel is placed in a boot-shaped instrument to obtain the reading in just a few minutes.

Bladder Ultrasound

If you and your doctor suspect you have a problem completely emptying your bladder, a condition prevalent in some older patients, he or she may recommend the bladder ultrasound. The test employs ultrasound to detect urine held in the bladder after the patient has urinated. If this is detected, then the patient is usually referred to a urologist for further evaluation. It is a painless test taking less than 15 minutes.
